Australian Volleyball Academy selections for 2023 have been announced!

There have been thirty-one athlete selections from across Australia that have been selected to partake in the 2023 Australian Volleyball Academy (AVA).

Hosted at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, the AVA looks to continue it’s development program for indoor and beach volleyball. Looking to take the next steps in their sporting career, an essential aspect of Australia’s National Development Program enables athletes to develop and learn in an environment that is catered specifically to sport-specific training.

Ten new athletes look to join the nineteen-strong men’s program, whilst the twelve athletes for the females program are divided evenly between recurring and new athletes.  National Pathways Manager and AVA Program Director, Paul Smith, states that the program provides benefit and success in instilling core values in what it takes to compete at an elite senior international level. “The AVA is a way to accelerate athletes within our high performance environment to get them ready for the next steps on their athletic pathway”, said Smith, “They might spend 2-3 years with us training in both disciplines on a year-round basis”.

In addition “These are athletes we’re targeting for future national team representation”.

Smith highlights the focus of not only developing them as athletes, but also as well rounded individuals as they tackle life’s challenges. “They’re learning how to become full-time athletes. The athletes are still at high school, studying at university or doing some kind of work”.  Through the AVA, the athletes also gain exposure to educational subjects such as; athlete wellbeing, sports integrity, coaching and officiating , nutrition, and even some sports medicine”.

Whilst there are still two Olympic cycles to come, Smith states his confidence that the likelihood of the current members of AVA may be presented with the opportunity to find themselves in the home Games in 2032. “The peak age for a volleyball athlete in either discipline is their late 20’s. The kids that are here now, in nine years time when Brisbane rolls around they’re going to be right in that peak age bracket”.

In conjunction with Volleyball Australia, Volleyball Victoria wish to congratulate the following Victorian athletes who were selected:

  • Mitchell Croft
  • Sam Kay
  • William Kay
  • Jaspreet Singh
