The Melbourne Vipers return to the Australian Volleyball League this weekend after a two-year COVID-hiatus as they head to Perth to face off in a double-header against the WA Steel.
The Women’s Vipers are reigning Gold Medallists from 2019’s season in what was the Vipers’ inaugural season in the Australian Volleyball League. Captained by former Australian Volleyroo Captain Kelly Lean, the Women’s Vipers will get their campaign underway with an 8pm (AEDST) match (5pm local Perth time).
Lean wants to go back-to-back:
“Our 2019 premiership was three years ago now and while a lot has changed between now and then, we’re really looking forward to the opportunity to defend our claim as reigning AVL premiers.
“We’re also welcoming some new talent to the team this year such as Molly Richardson, Jemma Stokes, Gwen Thornton just to name a few. We’ve also got some developing stars coming through such as twins Milla and Cat Smith, Arwen Verdnik.”
“We’re just excited to finally be back into it. The girls have been working really hard, fine-tuning things and just enjoying being back out on court at this level after such a long break. Good test to start us off with one of the strongest teams in the league with WA.
The Men’s Vipers won a Bronze Medal in 2019 and will be looking to go further this year however Round 1 sees them against former Vipers superstar Jose Martinez now playing for Steel in an 10pm (AEDST) late-night blockbuster (7pm local Perth time).
Captain Nick Boesten is looking forward to the opportunity:
“We’re excited to be able to play again. The last two years have been tough with no season but it’s been great to see there this year there are some returning players as well as some new additions like Caleb Adams, Liam Van Gemst, Dan Cleary.
“Josh (Cowan, Head Coach) and the rest of the coaching team have been great working with us in the lead-up and we’re more than ready to go this weekend.
On Sunday, the teams will play again with the Women’s playing at 2pm (AEDST) and the Men’s at 4pm (AEDST) before returning home to Melbourne.
All matches will be live-streamed via streaming partner Cluch. Make sure to register an account and watch this weekend’s matches hosted by Volleyball WA.
