VVL New Structure & Competitions for 2024 Season
Published Fri 08 Dec 2023
The Victorian Volleyball League (VVL) has released to affiliates the new structure and competitions for the 2024 season, including a brand-new Junior Premier League for Under 19s.
- A new Junior Premier League competition for U19s
- A new structure for Youth State League introducing U17s and U15s
- La Trobe University VC and Mornington VC enter Premier Two teams
- A new structure for the Volleyball Victoria League
The new junior competition will increase competitive match opportunities for the age group developing towards the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, playing a traditional best-of-five sets format, and creating a stepping stone for clubs with strong school or junior academy connections to allow for the best U19 athletes to represent their club. Team entries are open to all affiliates regardless of their Premier League status.
Underneath this will be the Youth State League, replacing the previous Junior League, which will have an U17s and U15s competition in both boys and girls to start with in 2024. This is designed to remove barriers to participation and allow for a clearer competitive entry point for school-aged athletes. The Youth State League will be based on regions/zones and be played across multiple venues according to team entries, allowing room for expansion and additional age groups in the future.
As well as the new competitions and structure, La Trobe University Volleyball Club and Mornington Volleyball Club will field senior men’s and women’s teams in the Premier League Two competition, expanding that division to 14 teams underneath the flagship Premier One competition.
Volleyball Victoria has made these changes to the VVL structure to meet the needs of the rapidly-growing sport in Victoria, which experienced another 20 per cent increase in memberships from 2022 and has nearly 50 per cent of current members aged between 13 and 19 years.
All VVL competitions are scheduled to begin in early April 2024.
