Next week sees the School Sport Victoria Team travel to Adelaide to compete in the School Sport Australia 15 and Under Championships from 17th – 23rd August. Both sides have completed their training block and this week excitement builds before the weekend’s departure.

SSV Girls

With many outstanding athletes in attendance and the Girls competition being played on a 2.15m net, serve reception becomes a key ingredient a high focus on effective serve reception has been included within the training block. This combined with practise matches as part of the Western Region Tournament and against other state sides at Dandenong, has allowed the SSV Girls to be as prepared as they possibly can be. During the presentation of shirts last weekend Isabella Maticevski was named as the side’s captain and will be ably assisted by Tarryn Duggan as Vice-Captain. Based on last years AVJC, South Australia looks to be the side to beat in the girls’ competition, but the Vic Girls will look to their powerful attack and systematic defence to take down the favourites.

SSV Boys

This year the Championships will be a strong competition, as some of the participating athletes played with the Australian Junior Volleyball Squad in Thailand.

A massive focus in our training sessions has been serve-reception and defence, as teams in the past being the best at these aspects of volleyball have made the finals.

We also participated in the Western Region Tournament and received gameplay against other Victorian State Teams. All the guys have been working really hard to improve and develop as individuals, but especially as a team during every training session. We are as prepared as we can be for the championships and we are looking forward to going up against the other states.

Jason Fernandes was named our captain for the boys and Conrad Van Ravenstein as the vice-captain – both very much deserved these leadership positions and will do a great job next week.

Last year’s AJVC Under 15 teams were strong and competitive, so this year all the teams will be tough to beat – we will need to produce our best volleyball to win.
